Job Summary:

The Technical Services Lab Associate will be responsible for documenting and preparing samples for testing and metallurgical evaluation. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, self-direction, and self-initiative. The successful candidate will have a strong analytical mindset and be able to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Examination and documentation of all samples in the as-received condition
  • Proper preparation of samples for metallurgical evaluation by cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching
  • Perform sample analysis/testing and document findings to assist in identifying potential issue(s)
  • Maintain accurate sample identification throughout the investigation process
  • Maintain optimal lab equipment performance by performing basic equipment maintenance as needed
  • Partner with Operations personnel and other labs as necessary to assist in identifying root cause(s)
  • Partner with Technical Service Engineers and TS Lab management in response to the SR
  • Follow Environmental, Quality, and Safety Management System procedures and requirements
  • Successfully complete all required training courses
Requirements:
  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One plus year of experience in a metallurgical lab environment as an analyst/associate/technician
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and build constructive relationships and trust with teammates
  • High level of attention to detail, self-direction, and self-initiative
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to think analytically
  • Knowledgeable about the safe handling of acids, bases, and solvents
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (i.e., Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering-related discipline
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced microscopy (lighting, image stitching, EFI, HDR, etc.)
  • One plus year steelmaking experience
Organizational Relationships:

Reports to the TS Lab Manager

Other lab analysts

Primary internal customers: TS Lab Management, TSE's, Operations personnel (Q/T managers/process engineers), Quality personnel, and customers during plant visits/tours
