Each year, we serve over 3,000 children from infancy through Pre-K with exceptional literacy and STEAM-focused education; we offer 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatic activities, camps, leadership development, and job opportunities; we provide over 200,000 members with diverse programs and facilities that promote connection and wellness; and we engage more than 25,000 volunteers and donors to support their communities.
Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Wellness Director, the Group Exercise Instructor-Level I for Land and/or Water is an integral member of our team, responsible for leading YMCA group exercise sessions both on land and in water. This role involves selecting appropriate music, managing class logistics, and educating participants on health and wellness topics, including THE COACH APPROACH. The Level I Group Exercise Instructor is expected to uphold the policies, mission, and values of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta while playing a vital role in initiatives aimed at strengthening community foundations through healthy living.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Experience in teaching group exercise classes is preferred but not mandatory; participation in group exercise for one or more years is acceptable.
- Land instructors are required to obtain YMCA/ACE online Group Exercise Instructor Certification (or equivalent) and complete additional courses mandated by Y-USA/Y-Metro Atlanta within 60 days of employment. For those teaching strength and conditioning classes, the YMCA Strength and Conditioning Instructor Certification is also necessary.
- Water instructors must secure all YMCA/AEA online certifications and complete the Y-Metro Atlanta Water Fitness Specialty Course or the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Certification within 60 days of employment.
- Must maintain certifications by submitting continuing education credits prior to expiration.
- Current CPR/AED certification is mandatory, with renewal every two years.
- Specialty Certifications (e.g., Y-Metro Atlanta Pilates, Group Cycling) or approved external certifications (e.g., TRX, Barre, Zumba) must be obtained before teaching the respective formats.
- Successful completion of a group exercise audition is required.
- Knowledge of fitness-related topics, including aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, nutrition, and injury prevention, is essential.
- Completion of THE COACH APPROACH Orientation within 30 days of hire is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster class interaction and teamwork are essential.
- Exemplify YMCA values and leadership qualities.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and solve problems effectively.
- Strong customer service skills and a commitment to service excellence are necessary.
- Must pass a background check and drug screening.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute daily program tasks aligned with the position's responsibilities.
- Stay informed on current trends in group fitness and wellness programs.
- Promote and ensure the smooth operation of group exercise classes, delivering high-quality service to participants.
- Maintain required certifications in CPR/AED and other necessary training.
- Fulfill continuing education requirements for wellness certifications.
- Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
- Curate personal music selections suitable for a family-friendly environment.
- Assist in various aspects of YMCA operations and community engagement.
- Participate in wellness cabinet activities.
- Ensure adherence to incident reporting procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Log class attendance accurately and in a timely manner.
- Regularly check for updates and opportunities within the GroupEx PRO system.
- Secure substitute instructors when necessary, following established protocols.
- Understand and apply YMCA risk and safety guidelines consistently.
- Refrain from providing medical advice or endorsing commercial health products.

Ergonomics:
This position involves sitting, bending, standing, and lifting up to 25 pounds, with exposure to elevated noise levels during classes.
