Job Title: ICU Nurse - Surgical and Neuroscience

The SICU and Neuro ICU at Albany Medical Center has 30 intensive care beds, providing specialized care to critically ill adults (14 and older). The unit typically cares for a 50/50 split of neuro and surgical patients.

We focus on patients with life-threatening conditions due to major elective and emergency surgeries, multi-trauma, brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure, sepsis/multi-organ system failure, hemodynamic instability, and failure to wean. Our patient needs include comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, treatment of laboratory values, ventilator management, and hemodynamic monitoring.

SICU-Neuro ICU nurses require skills such as ICP monitoring via EVD and bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion among others.

Nursing supports various on-unit procedures including arterial line placement, central lines, external ventricular drains, and ICP monitors, SEPS drains, bedside bronchoscopy, abdominal washouts, tracheostomy, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement, lumbar punctures, chest tubes, pigtail drains, and others.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement physician orders, administer medications, start IVs, perform treatments, procedures, and special tests.
  • Document treatment as required by company policy and local/state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs for, and responses to, care rendered.
  • Apply sound nursing judgment in patient care management decisions.
  • Provide primary and emergency care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Collaborate with the nursing team to create a Plan of Care for all patients.
  • Direct and guide ancillary personnel and maintain standards of professional nursing.
Requirements:
  • Graduate of a professional academic nursing program with a Diploma, Associate Degree, or Baccalaureate Degree.
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse license.
  • Ongoing certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Possess knowledge of quality concepts, principles, and problem-solving tools and techniques.
Estimated Salary:$84,480 annually, based on industry standards for this role and location.
