The Rail Signal Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of rail operations. This position involves conducting essential testing and maintenance of signal systems as mandated by regulatory bodies. The technician will oversee the installation, troubleshooting, and upkeep of various railroad signaling devices and grade crossing safety mechanisms, contributing to the seamless operation of commuter and freight rail services.

Key Responsibilities

The individual in this role will be tasked with the inspection, testing, and diagnostic evaluation of signal systems and safety communication devices. This includes:

  • Performing maintenance and repairs on signaling and communication equipment, including electronic and mechanical systems.
  • Diagnosing faults and troubleshooting issues through schematic interpretation and data analysis.
  • Assembling and disassembling signal crossing equipment.
  • Maintaining and replacing signal communication circuitry and components.
  • Documenting maintenance activities and diagnostic findings.
  • Responding to urgent maintenance calls as required.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and standards.
  • Collaborating with operations control to maintain safe work zones.
  • Operating specialized vehicles and equipment in various weather conditions.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in railroad signal maintenance.

A combination of relevant experience and education may be considered to meet the qualifications for this position.

Required Certifications

  • Signal Training Certification.
  • Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain necessary qualifications for railroad operations.

General Skills and Knowledge

  • Understanding of railroad signaling and communication systems.
  • Familiarity with federal regulations regarding signal maintenance.
  • Proficiency in analyzing and resolving technical issues.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain positive relationships with colleagues.
