Aquatic Safety Specialist Position Summary
The Keene Family YMCA is seeking a part-time Aquatic Safety Specialist to work in their busy Aquatics Center. As a member of the Aquatics team, the Aquatic Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants in the Aquatics Center. Additionally, the Aquatic Safety Specialist maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas to create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures with a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) lens.

Essential Functions of the Aquatic Safety Specialist

1. Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests, exemplifying the Y's commitment to DEI and the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and responds to all member and community inquiries in a timely manner.

2. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area by continuously scanning the pool area from side to side, regularly walking around the pool area to check blind spots, steam room, and sauna.

3. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the safe-in-six model (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report), completes related reports as required.

4. Maintains effective, positive, culturally aware relationships with members, participants, and other staff.

5. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area, maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.

6. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.

7. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.

8. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift.

9. The Aquatic Safety Specialist may be required to open or close the Aquatics Center.

10. Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.

Requirements:

1. Ability to perform duties with professionalism, enthusiasm, kindness, empathy, care, honesty, and respect.

2. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

3. Minimum age of 18.

4. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.

5. Current YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard certification.

6. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA/ARC standards.
