Position Overview

Are you seeking a seasonal opportunity that allows you to work predominantly outdoors while applying your maintenance expertise to care for the City's athletic fields? The City of Harrisonburg is looking for an Athletic Field Maintenance Technician.

This seasonal role offers a competitive hourly wage of $14.78. Ideal candidates will engage in various manual labor tasks focused on the upkeep and maintenance of athletic facilities.

Responsibilities:
  • Mowing and edging of athletic fields;
  • Dragging and lining of playing surfaces;
  • Rebuilding mounds and home plate areas with clay;
  • Collecting litter and debris;
  • Watering of athletic fields;
  • Operating a range of equipment and power tools, including lawn mowers, blowers, trimmers, edgers, and pressure washers.
Physical Demands: This position requires heavy physical exertion, including lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Tasks involve climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Effective communication skills are necessary for conveying instructions, and visual acuity is required for operating machinery and observing surroundings. Workers may encounter various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and noise. Personal protective equipment may be necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completion of the tenth grade or an equivalent combination of education and experience; a high school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age prior to the hire date.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Experience in athletic field maintenance or as a former athlete is preferred but not mandatory.
Preferred Skills:
  • Knowledge of safe equipment operation and maintenance;
  • Skill in using hand tools and assigned equipment;
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often in adverse weather conditions.
Screening Requirements: Selected candidates will undergo the following screenings:
  • DMV record review;
  • Job-specific physical;
  • Criminal background check.
