Literacy volunteer tutors serve in local schools and out-of-school settings, providing tutoring in essential early reading skills to students in grades First through Third. They build positive relationships that support, encourage, and motivate students, while committing to a minimum of four hours per week, over two days a week, for the entire school year, plus additional time for required training.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities- Work with designated students in either one-on-one or small groups of children
- Tutor students using AARP Foundation Experience Corps-approved curriculum and materials
- Model appropriate behavior for children
- Nurture students' self-esteem and a positive attitude toward learning
- Make a measurable impact on students' literacy
- Learn and develop new, transferable skills such as technology
- Work with a team making strong social connections
- Inspire, educate, and motivate future generations
- Contribute to your community in a meaningful way
- Be an older adult age 50 and older
- Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Agree to complete criminal background checks and tuberculosis tests
- Be passionate about education, children, and reading
- Successfully complete pre-service training
