State Income Tax Manager

Bennett Thrasher is seeking a highly skilled State Income Tax Manager to join our team. As a key member of our SALT (State and Local Tax) team, you will play a critical role in addressing clients' state and local tax issues.
Responsibilities:- Develop and implement processes for tax preparation teams, ensuring accurate and efficient workpapers.
- Conduct strategic reviews of returns, identifying areas of risk and opportunity.
- Provide expert guidance to other teams across the firm, addressing complex tax questions and concerns.
- Identify opportunities for integration with tax preparation teams, driving growth and innovation.
- Lead appointment studies, sourcing services and special industry expertise.
- Conduct filing methodology studies, analyzing beneficial elections and requirements.
- Stay up-to-date on Public Law and Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) SALT consulting, providing expert advice on 163(j), GILTI, and more.
- Resolve material prior period exposure for clients, modeling impact and ensuring compliance.
- Review state modifications, including Virginia pre-FTI modifications.
- Provide proactive state income tax planning, ensuring clients are optimized for tax savings.
- Lead state income tax controversy work, resolving disputes and ensuring client satisfaction.
- Develop and deliver state income tax trainings for the firm, ensuring all staff are equipped with the latest knowledge and expertise.
- Maintain open communication with management, ensuring projects are on track and deadlines are met.
- Build and maintain positive relationships across the firm, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
- Support interns and non-state tax staff in professional development, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
- Undergraduate degree required, CPA or JD preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of state income taxation, with a strong understanding of tax laws and regulations.
- Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex tax concepts to clients and colleagues.
- Strong commitment to professional and client service excellence, with a focus on delivering exceptional results.
- Time management, organizational, and prioritization skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple engagements simultaneously.
