Job Title: Multilingual Learner/English Language Teacher - Upper School

Supervisor: Director of Special Education

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement English language acquisition plans for students, ensuring alignment with curriculum guidelines and state standards.
  • Design and deliver small group ESL classes, as well as provide ESL support in regular classes, for students K-12.
  • Administer and manage language acquisition plans for all students identified as MLLs, utilizing SEMSTracker to maintain organized and complete files.
  • Plan and organize schedules for all MLL students to ensure state compliance and manage the administration of yearly ACCESS testing.
  • Develop additional materials to complement curriculum and work with teachers/grade teams to ensure MLL students are accessing in-class curriculum.

Planning and Preparation for Learning:

  • Develop a comprehensive game plan for the year, tightly aligned with state standards and assessments.
  • Plan all expeditions backwards, aligned with high standards, state assessments, and Bloom's levels; document and share all lessons with the supervisor at a minimum of two weeks in advance.
  • Design diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to closely monitor student learning and anticipate students' misconceptions and confusions.
  • Design lessons with clear, measurable goals closely aligned with standards and expedition outcomes, engaging all students in active learning and motivating them to reach their full potential.

Classroom Management:

  • Communicate and enforce high expectations, showing warmth, caring, respect, and fairness for all students and building strong relationships.
  • Implement a program that successfully develops positive interactions and social-emotional skills, inculcating class routines up front and successfully developing students' self-discipline, self-confidence, and a sense of responsibility.
  • Have a highly effective discipline repertoire and can capture and hold students' attention any time, skillfully using coherence, momentum, and transitions to produce learning.

Delivery of Instruction:

  • Exude high expectations and determination, convincing all students that they will master the material and actively inculcating a 'growth' mindset.
  • Show students exactly what's expected by posting learning targets, essential questions, rubrics, and exemplars, making connections into prior knowledge, experience, and reading.
  • Present material clearly and explicitly, with chosen examples and vivid and appropriate language, orchestrating highly effective strategies, materials, and groupings to involve and motivate all students.

Monitoring, Assessment and Follow-Up:

  • Post and review clear criteria for proficient work, including rubrics and exemplars, and all students internalize them.
  • Give students a constructed diagnostic assessment up front, and use the information to fine-tune instruction, continuously using a variety of effective methods to check for understanding.
  • Set ambitious goals with students, continually self-assess, and take responsibility for improving performance, frequently posting students' work with rubrics and commentary to celebrate progress and motivate direct effort.

Family and Community Outreach:

  • Show great sensitivity and respect for family and community culture, values, and beliefs, showing each parent/guardian an in-depth knowledge of their child and a strong belief they will meet or exceed standards.
  • Give parents/guardians clear, user-friendly learning and behavior expectations and exemplars of proficient work, making sure that parents/guardians hear positive news about their children first and immediately flag any problems.
  • Involve parents/guardians in supporting and enriching the curriculum for their children as it unfolds, assigning highly-engaging assignments, getting close to 100% return, and providing rich feedback.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Have perfect or near-perfect attendance and punctuality, carrying out assignments conscientiously and punctually, keeping meticulous records, and being never late.
  • In professional contexts, speak and write appropriately, succinctly, and eloquently.
