Internship Overview

We are seeking driven and passionate Transportation Interns to support a variety of engineering initiatives throughout Montana. This internship offers a unique opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals who are dedicated to nurturing your civil engineering interests and providing personalized mentorship to enhance your knowledge and skills in design projects. The selected intern will engage with various software applications to analyze, create, draft, document, and prepare design packages that contribute to Transportation efforts. There will also be chances to collaborate with related disciplines, including Water & Environmental Services, Transportation & Structures, and Construction Services. Responsibilities may involve fieldwork to collect data and assess site conditions.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential responsibilities effectively. The following qualifications outline the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Educational Background

Candidates should have completed at least one year of college coursework towards a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Previous experience in civil engineering-related fields is advantageous.

Required Certifications

A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in field investigations, evaluating alternative solutions, and project design.
  • Conduct engineering calculations to support design initiatives.
  • Compute construction quantities from plans and specifications to prepare bid items and estimate costs.
  • Provide drafting support using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
  • Prepare and manage project-related correspondence and documentation.
  • Aid in writing and revising construction specifications and technical reports.
  • Undertake additional engineering-related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical literature.
  • Respond effectively to inquiries or concerns from clients, colleagues, regulatory bodies, or community members.
  • Present information clearly to clients and team members.
  • Identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw logical conclusions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Prioritize projects and daily tasks to ensure timely and efficient completion.
  • Apply mathematical concepts, including geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to real-world scenarios.
  • Familiarity with Bentley MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience in construction, traffic, or other civil engineering-related areas is beneficial but not essential.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The role involves regular sitting, standing, and walking. Communication skills are essential, as is the ability to use hands for various tasks. The intern may occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is primarily office-based, with occasional fieldwork opportunities. Noise levels in the office are generally moderate, while construction sites may be louder, necessitating hearing protection.

Compensation will be adjusted based on geographic location.
