The Community Health Delivery System is actively seeking a full-time Clinical Care Assistant to join the UHealth Kendall team. The Clinical Care Assistant (CCA) will perform a variety of essential tasks to support medical providers. The CCA will assist in managing patients' healthcare and clinical procedures in a culturally sensitive manner, adhering to evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. This role involves providing hands-on care to patients while complying with regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. The supervising physician may delegate oversight of the CCA to a Nurse or designated individual in charge of the unit or clinic.

The CCA is expected to uphold ethical and legal standards of professional practice, respond appropriately to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. This position requires providing care that aligns with the philosophy, mission, vision, and values of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, the CCA will monitor the quality of care delivered and foster a compassionate and healing environment. The CCA collaborates directly with the Nurse Manager, Nurse Supervisor, Charge Nurse, or designated individual in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure safe and effective care delivery that supports the UHealth mission.

Caring Science

The Clinical Care Assistant (CCA) provides comprehensive care with compassion and kindness. As a team member, the CCA will employ creative strategies to address individual patient needs while respecting their spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices.

The CCA encourages patients to express their feelings openly, regardless of their emotional state. By creating a safe and comfortable environment, the CCA facilitates both physical and spiritual healing. Establishing a trusting relationship is paramount, achieved by maintaining an environment conducive to healing through authentic presence, identifying and managing discomforts, and providing emotional support.

Organization and Work Role Functions

The CCA prioritizes and integrates multiple requests and work expectations by performing tasks safely, professionally, and in a timely manner. Clear and timely communication with patients, families, and team members is essential, and seeking assistance when necessary is encouraged.

Contributing to team cohesion is vital, and participation in unit or clinic programs and meetings is expected. The CCA is committed to fostering positive morale and employing effective conflict resolution skills. Continuous learning and utilization of available technology resources for communication, documentation, and accessing relevant clinical information are crucial.

Ongoing educational development and competencies reflecting current clinical practices are essential. The CCA demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and is responsible for their professional growth and knowledge regarding the patient population and assigned duties.

Compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), is mandatory.

Meeting the diverse communication needs of patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is a priority.

Professional Practice

The CCA operates within their clinical scope of practice, adhering to State, Federal, and University of Miami standards, guidelines, and regulations. Protocols and standards of care are integrated into daily practice.

Providing and receiving constructive feedback with kindness is essential for personal and professional growth.

Core Duties and Qualifications

  • Adheres to ethical standards, therapeutic communication, and patient privacy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Assists providers during physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam rooms with necessary supplies and instruments.
  • Understands the significance of medical and surgical asepsis and prepares patients for physician care with basic instructions regarding examination procedures.
  • Conducts routine laboratory tests.
  • Performs vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and documents findings in patients' medical records.
  • Observes and reports changes in patients' signs or symptoms.
  • Administers medication safely as directed by the physician and assists in patient care activities.
  • Escorts and transports patients to various locations within the facility.
  • Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments while adhering to sterile technique principles.
  • Schedules patients for tests and completes necessary forms for laboratory work.
  • Provides patients with care instructions and information from the provider.
  • Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation, manages inventory of supplies, and assists with clerical duties.
  • Complies with University and unit-level Policies & Procedures and safeguards University assets.

Important Note: Clinical Care Assistants working in hospital-based units will not perform any type of medication administration.

Core Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).
  • Approved MA Certifications (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, NRCMA) are preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
  • HIV & AIDS Certification: Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education (CE) Certification is preferred.
  • No prior experience is necessary.
  • Strong communication skills with patients, families, and clinical teams.
  • Ability to adapt and demonstrate flexibility in changing environments.
  • Strong time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to professional ethics and maintaining patient confidentiality.
