Epidemiologist I - Full Time

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Epidemiologist I to join our team at the Minnesota Department of Health. As a key member of our Chronic Disease Syndromic Surveillance team, you will play a critical role in defining and describing the epidemiology of chronic conditions in Minnesota through the use of syndromic surveillance data.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and interpret syndromic surveillance data to inform the development of chronic disease surveillance systems.
  • Collaborate with the Chronic Disease Syndromic Surveillance Evaluator to design and implement algorithms to detect social determinants of health indicators through syndromic surveillance methodologies.
  • Evaluate syndromic surveillance data systems for chronic conditions in Minnesota.
  • Collect, aggregate, compile, and assess the validity of existing data sources statewide to assess the level of statewide public health surveillance of key chronic conditions.
Requirements:
  • Three (3) years of experience in healthcare, public health, nursing, social work, anthropology, sociology, or related field designing and conducting epidemiologic investigations and/or surveillance.
  • Ability to perform research and evaluate the public literature of chronic conditions, incorporate epidemiologic approaches to the design of syndromic surveillance queries, analyze syndromic surveillance data, compile and publish summaries of syndromic surveillance results, and report results using data visualization tools.
  • Ability to work successfully on diverse teams and employ health equity approaches to work.
  • Master's degree in epidemiology, environmental health, health services research, or data science, including relevant coursework in epidemiology, data science, economics, or evaluation.
  • Knowledge of statistics and computer statistical packages such as SAS, R, and related computer programming skills.
  • Knowledge and skills in data visualization using software such as Microsoft Excel or Tableau.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills sufficient for communicating with community groups, advisory groups, academic institutions, and provider organizations.
