Job Purpose

The objective of this role is to uphold the mission and values of the Greene County Public Library. This position is responsible for executing the goals outlined in the strategic plan to enhance community service. The Library Circulation Assistant will perform various circulation and clerical functions while ensuring exceptional customer service. The role involves working under direct supervision, with opportunities to work independently and resolve issues for patrons.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the checkout and check-in of library materials using a computerized system; process fines and charges for lost items; handle renewals and reservations; register patrons; and address circulation inquiries from visitors in person or via phone.
  • Sort and organize materials for shelving, including items from the book-drop, deliveries, and returns.
  • Address issues with incomplete or damaged items.
  • Oversee the circulation hold shelf.
  • Process the Paging List, execute Search Ohio and Clear hold-shelf reports, and prepare items for Resource Sharing.
  • Conduct opening and closing tasks, including managing fine collections.
  • Handle the processing of new materials and donations.
  • Manage the withdrawal of materials.
  • Repair and repackage damaged items.
  • Participate in training sessions, workshops, and conferences to stay updated on library practices.
  • Stay informed by regularly reviewing emails, meeting minutes, and staff communications, as well as attending staff meetings.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by the supervisor, which may include sorting mail and ordering supplies.
  • Assist with tasks typically assigned to lower-level classifications as needed.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Strong ability to provide knowledgeable customer service to assist library patrons effectively; demonstrate tact and courtesy in interactions with the public and colleagues.
  • Clear communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to read printed and digital information.
  • Proficient computer skills and capability to input data into an automated system.
  • Ability to multitask, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and manage challenging situations.
  • Basic understanding of library clerical principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Capability to address routine issues under the guidance of a supervisor while keeping them informed of departmental needs.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience in Customer Service.
Work Environment
  • The role is performed in an office-like environment, requiring considerable mobility, including light lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, and sitting at various desks and service points.
  • Work hours may include evenings and weekends, with schedules subject to change based on library needs.
