Job Summary

The City of Milwaukee is seeking a highly skilled Public Health Nurse to join our team. As a Public Health Nurse, you will play a critical role in promoting health and well-being in our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct home visits to provide health services to clients, including pregnant women, newly delivered mothers, and their infants and family support systems.
  • Provide health-related education, including breastfeeding support, prenatal and postpartum support, and early childhood health, development, and well-being.
  • Work in a dyad model with Public Health Social Workers to address the compounding nature of the social determinants of health.
  • Administer immunizations during scheduled clinics at MHD health centers.
  • Provide family-centered case management to assess developmental, nutritional, and medical needs of children who test positive for lead poisoning.
  • Work collaboratively with Lead Risk Assessors to assure lead-safe housing.
  • Perform communicable disease control activities, such as detection, intervention, surveillance, education, and referral, to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Work collaboratively with MHD programs to investigate reportable communicable disease outbreaks.
  • Provide breast and cervical cancer screening to eligible women, coordinate diagnostic services, and enroll women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer into Medicaid, as needed.
  • Participate in the prevention of STI, HIV, and other communicable diseases through one-on-one counseling, group education, and community outreach.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current permit or license to practice professional nursing in Wisconsin or eligibility to receive such permit or license.
  • Valid driver's license and possession of a properly insured vehicle for use on the job.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to provide interpretation for clients who speak Spanish, Hmong, or another language.
Working Conditions
  • Participate in a work schedule that includes occasional weekend and evening hours.
  • Must wear industry-related personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, facemask, or face shield.
  • May travel outside the City of Milwaukee, occasionally overnight, to attend training and conferences.
  • May be required to carry a mobile device during business hours.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs.
  • May be exposed to infectious agents or toxins.
  • May be required to respond to an emergency and/or broad impact event.
