School Nutrition Assistant

As a School Nutrition Worker with Bedford County Public Schools, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our students by providing a safe and nutritious food environment. This position requires a team player who can work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen setting, maintaining high standards of food safety and sanitation.
Essential Duties
Assist in the preparation of all food items, including main dishes, sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and fruits and vegetables.
Set up food preparation and serving lines, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation of the cafeteria.
Assist in cooking, setting up, and serving food items to students and staff, adhering to state and federal regulations and the requirements of the National School Lunch Program.
Maintain the food service facility and equipment in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition, adhering to established HACCP Guidelines and Procedures.
Operate a variety of kitchen equipment, including ovens, mixers, slicers, steamers, and dishwashers.
Assist with inventory control of food items and supplies, ensuring accurate tracking and ordering.
May act as a cashier, collecting money, making change, and counting money, while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must possess a basic knowledge of food preparation and food safety and sanitation, as well as the ability to perform basic cooking functions and operate a variety of food service equipment. You must also be able to work quickly and efficiently, read and write, and understand and carry out oral and written directions. A strong work attendance record and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school nutrition staff, other school staff, parents, and the community are also essential.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time on cement floors, exhibit manual dexterity, hear and understand speech at normal levels, speak in audible tones, and physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds. You must also be able to withstand variable kitchen temperatures from extreme heat to extreme cold. The work environment is usually moderate to loud, with temperatures varying from extreme heat to extreme cold.
