Position Summary

The English Language Arts Teacher, under the guidance of the School Principal, plays a crucial role in facilitating students' mastery of grade-level English language arts competencies. This involves promoting critical thinking, utilizing diverse and relevant texts, prioritizing student voices, and emphasizing writing as a means of analysis. The instructor will implement a curriculum aligned with the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards, crafting lesson plans that cater to the varied learning needs of all students, including those in general education, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned lesson plans that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing students for state examinations and advanced coursework.
  • Employ student-centered teaching strategies to engage learners and tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with disabilities and ELLs.
  • Utilize common curriculum resources and frameworks to ensure consistency and alignment across all grade levels.
  • Collaborate with Special Education and English as a New Language teachers to support differentiated instruction.
  • Analyze assessment data to refine teaching practices and enhance student outcomes.
  • Maintain effective classroom management and adhere to school policies to foster a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Establish a classroom culture characterized by respect, inclusivity, and high academic expectations.
  • Provide timely feedback on student work and maintain accurate records of student performance.
  • Engage with families to communicate student progress and areas for growth.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to school-wide initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred.

  • Previous teaching experience, particularly in urban settings, is advantageous.
  • Dual certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Students with Disabilities is a plus.
  • Must have NYS Department of Education fingerprint clearance.
