Position Summary
The Campus Safety Officer role is situated within the Patrol Operations of Campus Safety. Officers in this position serve as the primary safety and security personnel for the institution. Their responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, patrolling the campus and its facilities, as well as assisting the campus community with various issues and concerns. Multiple positions will be filled from this posting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts patrols of designated areas, physically inspecting buildings and checking doors, windows, entries, and exits for safety.
  • Responds to fire alarms and emergencies.
  • Coordinates with fire and police divisions and other public safety agencies.
  • Provides initial response to emergencies and criminal incidents on campus; conducts preliminary investigations to determine outcomes.
  • Offers general assistance to the campus community and visitors.
  • Apprehends violators of applicable laws and regulations occurring on or involving university property.
  • Operates university patrol vehicles and communication equipment as required.
  • Prepares written reports and maintains logs of campus activities.
  • Serves as the Division dispatcher, managing incoming service calls, monitoring alarms, dispatching officers, and overseeing CCTV systems.
  • Complies with all Division and university policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection process as needed.
  • Engages in Division recruitment and accreditation initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 21 at the time of hiring.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license and insurability under university guidelines required; must obtain a valid driver's license within the specified timeframe.
  • Successful completion of a written job-related skills examination.
  • Pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history and verification of employment and education.
  • Complete a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and human performance evaluation conducted by an approved physician.

Post-Hire Employment Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License within three weeks of hire.
  • Successful completion of initial training in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and Threat Pattern Recognition within three weeks of hire.
  • Maintain re-certifications in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED and Threat Pattern Recognition to ensure job-related skills are current.
  • Complete an annual physical assessment test as part of Threat Pattern Recognition re-certification to maintain physical fitness standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent coursework in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 6+ months of related law enforcement or campus safety experience; or a combination of education and experience.

Work Environment
As field-based personnel, Campus Safety Officers regularly work outdoors in various weather conditions. This position may require assignment to any shift or combination of shifts as determined by management. Officers are considered essential personnel and may be called upon to work additional hours as needed.

Physical Requirements
All personnel required to have a City and County of Denver Security Guard License must successfully pass a job-related human performance evaluation as part of their employment offer. This evaluation will assess various physical capabilities necessary for the role.

Work Schedule
This is a non-exempt position requiring a 40-hour work week with varied hours during a 24/7 operational schedule. Officers participate in a seniority-based shift bid and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
