Job Summary
As a Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist, you'll conduct routine and stat laboratory tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and perform related duties, following established standards and practices under limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform analyses using appropriate procedures with precision and accuracy, operating instruments and equipment accurately, and evaluating results to ensure validity before reporting values.
- Use correct technique, policy, and protocol in collection and processing of all specimens, verifying patient and specimen identification, and properly labeling specimens with relevant information.
- Instruct new employees, students, and residents at the bench in procedure, technique, and theory, documenting proficiency and informing section leaders or managers of any issues.
- Restock items in use, maintain a clean and orderly work area, and document receipt and opening of supplies, monitoring expiration dates and following established protocol.
- Review pending logs, worksheets, and other documents for accuracy and completeness, taking appropriate action as needed, and ensuring proper retention of specimens.
- Observe and respond correctly and immediately to safety violations and safety drills, reporting and documenting personal exposure to hazardous or infectious situations, and using lab biosafety levels and universal precautions guidelines.
- Employ good organizational skills, prioritize tasks, and utilize time efficiently, reporting results in a timely manner and observing meal and break periods according to workload and schedule.
- Report critical values according to Laboratory policy and document verbal reports, ensuring accurate and timely communication.
- Document personal CE attendance and presentations, and complete all objectives from previous evaluations, as well as required 6-month and annual competencies.
Requirements
Associate's Degree or equivalent Medical Laboratory Technology Program Degree that meets ASCP or AMT requirements, with no required experience. In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, a certificate/diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course (per DD214) is acceptable.
