Position Overview:
This role is for a Clinical Dietitian within the Clinical Section of the Nutrition and Food Services (NFS), serving as the primary expert in medical nutrition.

The Clinical Dietitian operates independently, utilizing evidence-based nutrition guidelines to cater to all patients, particularly those with intricate medical and nutritional requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Dietitians are responsible for coordinating the nutritional care of Veterans in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, the Veteran, their caregivers, and the community. They analyze research and apply whole health principles to create individualized goals that enhance patient outcomes. Additionally, they work alongside the Food Operations Section to improve the dining experience for Veterans and ensure their satisfaction.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Conducting thorough nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP), including nutrition-focused physical examinations, to establish nutrition diagnoses and assess malnutrition risks.
  • Designing and executing Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to address identified nutrition diagnoses, while evaluating and monitoring the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Adjusting dietary plans as necessary to ensure positive health outcomes.
  • Calculating nutrient needs and dietary restrictions, tailoring prescriptions to meet individual patient requirements.
  • Documenting MNT in medical records following the Assessment, Diagnosis, Intervention, Monitoring, Evaluation (ADIME) format.
  • Identifying educational needs and providing tailored nutrition education and counseling for individuals and groups.
  • Collaborating with the Food Operations Section and leadership to enhance the dining experience and support patient satisfaction.
  • Maintaining accurate records of clinical activities and patient encounters.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings and contributing to strategic planning and policy implementation.
  • Staying updated on current nutrition research and potentially engaging in clinical research activities.

Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday, with flexibility for telework as needed.

Qualifications:
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and proficient in English. Registration as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) is required, along with completion of an accredited dietetics program.

Preferred Experience:
Experience in clinical nutrition within a hospital setting, particularly with diverse patient populations, is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires the ability to use fingers, walk, stand, and maintain emotional stability.
