Typical Work Activities:

As a Senior Inspector Mechanic with the Rochester Housing Authority, you will be responsible for inspecting occupied and vacant housing units to determine their condition and identify needed maintenance or repairs. You will prepare work orders to initiate maintenance and repairs that are beyond the scope of inspection visits, perform minor repairs during inspection visits, and conduct more complex tasks involving rough and finished carpentry, cabinet making, and plumbing systems and fixtures. You will also perform various tasks relating to the mechanical or construction trades, provide direction and on-site supervision to maintenance mechanics and laborers, and complete simple reports and logs regarding inspection and maintenance activities.

Entry-Level Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

To be successful in this role, you will need knowledge of the principles and practices of building maintenance and repair, especially as related to multiple residential units. You will also need knowledge of the construction and mechanical trades, including common practices, tools, terminology, and accident-prevention measures. You will be able to perform difficult and complex tasks in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades, understand building construction plans, specifications, and rough sketches, and follow oral and written directions. You will also be able to complete simple written forms, logs, and reports, evaluate the condition of units, and identify maintenance or repair needs.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

In addition to the entry-level knowledge, skills, and abilities, you will need knowledge of standards pertaining to the condition of RHA's residential units and the criteria affecting the priorities of inspections and maintenance activities. You will be able to direct the work of maintenance personnel and have a strong understanding of the construction and mechanical trades.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for this role, you must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. and one of the following:

  • Three years of experience as a skilled worker in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades;
  • A certificate or diploma from a technical training program in the construction or mechanical trades and two years of experience as a skilled worker in one or more trades.
Special Requirement:

You must possess a valid New York State Class 5 Driver's license at time of appointment.
