OBJECTIVE:

To design, oversee, and execute therapeutic recreation programs as an integral part of the patient’s care strategy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct comprehensive activity evaluations through patient observation and interviews with patients and their families, gathering essential information regarding the patient’s needs, abilities, interests, and limitations to formulate and execute the treatment strategy.
  • Organize, manage, and carry out activities within the therapeutic program to support patient advancement towards treatment objectives.
  • Develop and implement a diverse activities program encompassing therapeutic leisure skills, leisure education, and awareness.
  • Lead and facilitate activity sessions aimed at enhancing the mental and physical health of patients.
  • Instruct patients in various activities and techniques, including sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation methods tailored to their individual requirements.
  • Create treatment strategies and execute activity interventions that align with patient interests and assist them in achieving their therapeutic goals.
  • Engage patients in therapeutic activities such as exercise, games, and community outings.
  • Assist patients in acquiring social skills necessary for independence.
  • Adapt activities to meet the specific needs of different groups.
  • Exhibit a positive, empathetic, and professional demeanor towards all clients, addressing and resolving complaints when patient needs are unmet, while prioritizing patient safety.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or a related discipline is required.
  • A Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in recreation within a healthcare environment, with an understanding of the patient demographics served by the organization, is essential.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare recreational setting is advantageous.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or currently pursuing national certification; OR certification in a specialized area (Art, Dance, Music, etc.) OR clinical professional licensure (LCPC, LPC, etc.) with certification in expressive therapy is required.
  • CPR and de-escalation and restraint certification are mandatory (training provided upon hire).
First aid certification may be required based on state or organizational regulations.
