The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Department Manager for Material Acquisition and Research Engineering within our Nuclear Science & Technology Directorate. This role is based in our Idaho Falls facility and operates on a flexible schedule.
Department Responsibilities:
The Material Acquisition and Research Engineering Department plays a crucial role in facilitating research initiatives by providing procurement and engineering support. This includes the design and development of equipment and systems essential for various research projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the Technical Integrator, overseeing the review and approval of engineering documentation to bolster research efforts.
- Lead and manage departmental activities through a team of supervisors and professionals, offering guidance within established company policies.
- Ensure the effective operation of significant organizational activities, making decisions that influence team dynamics and methodologies.
- Oversee financial planning, business strategies, and workforce management, ensuring that budgets and performance metrics are met.
- Manage a team of employees engaged in similar tasks, which may include supervisory and non-supervisory staff.
- Receive assignments based on objectives and allocate resources to achieve project timelines and goals.
- Propose policy changes and establish procedures that impact the department and potentially the broader division, contributing to long-term strategic goals.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders outside of your area of expertise and engage with external partners.
- Function at a third level of management with responsibilities for human resources, primarily through the management of others.
- Report directly to the Director.
Qualifications:
- A degree (BS or MS) in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, accompanied by at least 5 years of relevant experience in an R&D setting.
- Demonstrated management experience with a focus on recruiting and developing engineering talent, alongside a solid understanding of the engineering design process and procurement methodologies.
- Familiarity with engineering practices and research methodologies is essential.
- Knowledge of quality standards and procurement operations is required.
- This role necessitates the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.
Compensation and Benefits:
- The anticipated salary range for this position is $137,000 to $203,855 annually, with compensation decisions based on education, experience, and qualifications.

- This position is designated for drug testing; candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment drug screen and periodic testing thereafter.
