About the Role:
The Financial Counselor at Guidehouse is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely patient financial services. This position plays a critical role in estimating patient liability for services rendered and communicating with patients regarding financial responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Counseling: Determine patient responsibility and eligibility through insurance, federal, state, and/or county government benefits.
- Account Review: Review accounts for proper plan codes, financial class, and patient type.
- Verification and Negotiation: Contact appropriate agencies to verify assumptions of liability and negotiate flat rates on accounts where the patient has no linkage to government programs.
- Bedside Counseling: Inform patients of financial responsibility prior to discharge and set up payment plans with patients prior to discharge.
- Collection and Follow-up: Collect monies from patients when there is an estimated patient liability due on the account and monitor Medicare days and co-insurance days on in-house patients.
- Representation and Communication: Represent patients at Medicaid or SSI fair hearings/appeals and interface with facility Social Services and Case Management Departments regarding inpatient admissions and discharges.
- Documentation and Retrieval: Document all payer and patient financial information in the hospital computer system and retrieve inpatient census patient information within the facility to follow up on in-house patients no insured or under insured.
- Communication and Organization: Communicate daily with co-workers, hospital, and management regarding account progress and/or other issues and utilize organization and prioritization skills in daily tasks.
Requirements:
- Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience required.
- Experience: 1-3 years' experience with medical terminology, data entry, prior admitting, entitlement, business office or physician office experience.
- Skills: PC skills in a Windows environment required, working knowledge/experience of Federal, State and County eligibility programs, and ability to type 35-45 words per minute.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Knowledge of MS4: Knowledge of MS4 helpful.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Project Management: Ability to initiate and follow through on projects and work independently.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
