This position plays a crucial role in supporting the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in its mission to serve veterinarians, scientists, educators, and the livestock and poultry industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining the Histology Laboratory, performing complex histologic procedures, and contributing to research projects.
Responsibilities:- Operate and maintain the Histology Laboratory, performing multi-step complex histologic procedures as a diagnostic research tool for the detection of viral, bacterial, and abnormal growth diseases.
- Process and embed all submitted pathologic tissue, micro sections, stains, and coverslips.
- Prepare various solutions and reagents necessary to perform histologic tests.
- Perform automated and manual staining procedures, including routine and special stains.
- Select and assess control slides through microscopic examination for accuracy and acceptability of stain results.
- Troubleshoot nonconforming results and follow established protocols and guidelines.
- Participate in research projects from within and outside the CVM, as directed by senior laboratory professionals.
- Contribute to national histologic study sets by preparing case study material and participating in national proficiency testing through the National Veterinary Service Laboratory.
- Maintain all complex laboratory equipment according to manufacturers' recommendations and assist in troubleshooting equipment malfunctions.
- Calibrate equipment in compliance with quality control protocols and document actions and results in an online quality control software program.
- Maintain daily logbooks of workload and archives daily checklists of special stain procedures.
- Perform general laboratory maintenance tasks, including conducting inventory, handling and disposing of hazardous waste material, and performing general laboratory cleaning duties.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certified HT (Histotechnician) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or pending certification within 6 months of hire date.
- Preferred qualifications include experience working in veterinary laboratory/clinic or working with animal research samples and basic knowledge of anatomy.
