Job Summary

The Infection Prevention Specialist is an entry-level position designed for the novice infection preventionist. This role is ideal for an RN or MT looking to learn the field of infection control and epidemiology.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in mock surveys and compliance audits to ensure adherence to infection control protocols.
  • Conduct audits of high-level disinfection outside of the Sterile Processing Department to ensure proper procedures are followed.
  • Monitor the Sterilization Process (SPD) to ensure effective sterilization of medical equipment.
  • Perform independent hand hygiene observations, offer just-in-time coaching and education, and report findings to the infection control team for monthly reports.
  • Conduct independent environmental cleaning observations, offer coaching and education to EVS staff, and report findings to the infection control team for monthly reports.
  • Perform independent isolation observations, offer coaching and education on PPE and isolation precautions, and report findings to the infection control team for monthly reports.
  • Surveillance for hospital-acquired infections (HAI) and Communicable Diseases according to Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 3701-
  • Audit and teach hand hygiene classes for hand hygiene coaches on a scheduled basis, reviewing hand hygiene data monthly for units/departments to collaborate on improvement work.
  • Participate in Communicable Disease Exposure Investigations and Outbreaks.
  • Audit and teach Nurse Residency ASCEND education classes on a scheduled basis.
  • Audit and teach staff and provider education classes as needed.
  • Communicate with outside agencies on various issues, such as communicable disease reporting.
  • Maintain timely and proper documentation.
  • Serve as a resource for infection control concerns from staff, outside agencies, patients, families, and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
  • Experience in use of databases, such as RedCap, is preferred.
  • Experience working with all levels within an organization is preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare is preferred.
  • Experience with Word Documents or similar software, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is preferred.
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in nursing or Lab Medical Technology is required. Master's in public health or higher is preferred.

Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is required within 2 years from date of hire to retain position.

Must have CIC test scheduled at 18-month mark to test and re-test if needed by 2-year anniversary date.

2 years of experience in a hospital setting is required.

No experience supervising is required.
