Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and laying pipe for storm drains, sanitary sewers, waterlines, and other types of pipelines. Key duties include:

  • Excavating trenches properly, shoring them, and preparing the site for pipeline installation.
  • Grading and leveling trench foundations, aligning and positioning pipes, and checking pipe slopes using levels or lasers to ensure they conform to specifications.
  • Ensuring trenches are bedded and backfilled correctly so that pipes are not out of round and installing pipes on grade and airtight as required.
  • Safely monitoring progress, ensuring work is completed efficiently, and supporting the Foreman in these efforts.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must have:

  • Advanced knowledge of equipment setup, including lasers, transits, grade rods, and line levels.
  • Vast knowledge of differing types of soils and shoring techniques, as well as adherence to OSHA rules and guidelines for trenching and sloping.
  • Advanced understanding of survey stakes, cuts, fills, and elevations.
  • Ability to lay out pipe routes using blueprints and coordinate with the Foreman.
  • Experience with setting up and operating a pipe laser, establishing lines, entering proposed slopes, and reading grade rods accurately.
  • Able to use logic, reason, and math as needed for the job, generate efficient methods quickly to resolve roadblocks, adapt to differing soil types and conditions, and install good pipe on shallow grades without rework in decent ground and minimal water.
  • Ability to set the pace of the crew and handle oversized structures.
Requirements

In addition to the above skills and qualifications, candidates must:

  • Hold a valid driver's license.
  • Participate in pre-employment and random drug screening programs.
  • Undergo a background screening process.

$62,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience.
