Key Responsibilities
  • Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students
  • Serve as a health advocate for students, notifying parents of accidents or illnesses and securing medical care as needed
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records for all students
  • Coordinate the administration of medications to students according to district policy and procedures
  • Develop and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs
  • Participate in the development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups
  • Collaborate with other professionals to implement health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items
  • Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or health services coordinator
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
  • Valid Registered Nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Certification by the Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing, and spinal screening
  • CPR certification
  • Two years of nursing experience, preferably in school health
Working Conditions

The School Health Nurse will work in a fast-paced environment, interacting with students, teachers, parents, and medical professionals. The position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing, lifting, and carrying. The nurse will also be exposed to blood-borne pathogens and communicable disease, which will be controlled by using Universal Precautions.
