About the Role

The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a skilled Processing Archivist to join our team. As a key member of our Research Center, you will be responsible for the acquisition, organization, preservation, and documentation of our vast art and architecture archives.

You will work closely with our curatorial departments to develop and implement digital tools, assist with exhibitions, and provide reference and research services to our diverse patrons.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of programs and publications that feature our archival holdings and to work collaboratively with fellow staff to achieve departmental goals.

Responsibilities
  • Collection management: Administer primary research materials, including manuscripts, photographs, drawings, and realia. Engage in processing, including physical arrangement and creation or revision of discovery tools and related documentation.
  • Facilitate access: Make collections available to scholars through digital resources such as finding aids, digitized content, and webpages.
  • Stewardship: Assist in soliciting donors, maintaining relationships with curators and dealers, and assisting with exhibitions.
  • Support the department: Assist with managing on-site operations, devising operating procedures, and planning initiatives and events.
Requirements
  • Graduate degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in an archive setting, with a minimum of 1 year experience processing and creating finding aids.
  • Experience creating and/or editing finding aids in native EAD (XML).
  • Knowledge of MARC, DACS, and Dublin Core.
  • Capacity for analytical work, accuracy, neatness, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
