Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Bilingual Education Assistant to join our team at Harahan School. As a key member of our educational staff, you will play a vital role in supporting the academic success of our students who require English language support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction and tutoring in all subject areas to students with limited English proficiency.
  • Act as a liaison between the school administration, teachers, and parents to ensure effective communication and coordination of support services.
  • Translate notes, forms, and letters to the home language to facilitate communication with parents and guardians.
  • Assist students in developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in their first and/or second language.
  • Tutor and reinforce content area concepts in the native language in small groups or individually.
  • Coordinate with ELAD and/or content teachers to arrange a schedule of native language content area tutoring.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining a positive classroom climate and supporting student discipline.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and meetings as requested by the supervisor or ELAD Coordinator.
  • Assist in record keeping and data collection as required by the school and the Bilingual/ELAD Department.
  • Support the teacher in coordinating parent volunteer activities and other school events.
Requirements
  • An Associate Degree (in any language) or 48 hours of approved college courses (in any language) or Pass ParaPro Praxis and have a high school diploma and/or equivalency.
  • Proof of education from the native country.
  • Oral and written proficiency in English and in one of the major languages of the population to be served.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College degree preferred.
Work Environment

The Bilingual Education Assistant will work in a climate-controlled environment at the assigned school, adhering to the School Board's energy policy. The workday follows the regular schedule at the assigned school.

Communication Skills

The Bilingual Education Assistant must be able to communicate in English both orally and in writing as well as in one of the languages of the students to be served. They must also be able to communicate successfully and pleasantly with parents, students, and school personnel.

Equipment Used
  • Overhead projector, tape recorder, record player, language master, computer, VCR/television, telephone.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Mobility skills to access varied areas in the school setting.
  • Ability to lift, bend, climb, and move materials and equipment as needed.
  • If itinerant, ability to provide own transportation to different job sites and mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.
Human Relations Involvement
  • Must work compatibly with school-based personnel.
  • Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement. Must interact positively with parents.
  • Must be sensitive to the cultures of all students.
