The State of Oregon is seeking a highly qualified General Microbiology Manager and Responsible Official to serve as the Section Manager for the Microbiology Section, as well as the Responsible Official for our Select Agent Program.
This is a full-time, permanent, management service position that requires a strong background in laboratory management, compliance, and public health.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide administrative and managerial oversight of analytical and specialized testing for infectious diseases and agents of public health interest in the General Microbiology section of the Public Health Laboratory.
- Ensure that the laboratory is in compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and standards.
- Develop and implement quality control and quality assurance programs to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
- Supervise and manage a team of laboratory staff, including scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
- Develop and manage budgets, including personnel, equipment, and supplies.
- Collaborate with other departments and agencies to ensure effective communication and coordination of laboratory activities.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Provide training and education to laboratory staff on new procedures, technologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Develop and implement corrective action plans to address any compliance issues.
- A master's degree in laboratory science, clinical microbiology, public health, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of three years of supervisory or management experience in a public health laboratory.
- Experience in laboratory management, compliance, and public health.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and standards related to laboratory operations.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.
- Advanced degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in microbiology, public health, public policy, public administration, or other closely related disciplines.
- Experience in budgeting, contracting, and financial management processes.
- Ability to analyze, apply, and explain laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
- Experience working with confidential information in public health or healthcare settings.
- Experience working with diverse partners, incorporating community input, and implementing programs and policies that further health equity.
The work of this role will be performed on-site at the Oregon State Public Laboratory located in Hillsboro, Oregon. Frequent travel may be required.
