Fire Watch Specialist

Job Summary:
The Night Fire Watch is a critical role that ensures the safety of our work environment by identifying potential fire hazards and maintaining a continuous surveillance in areas where hot work is performed. This position is responsible for preventing fires and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations and company policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Surveillance: Monitor work areas where hot work or fire-prone activities are performed, especially near combustible materials.
- Fire Prevention: Identify potential fire hazards and take action to mitigate risks by ensuring flammable materials are removed or properly stored.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to use fire extinguishers or other firefighting equipment in the event of a fire, and alert emergency services immediately if needed.
- Communication: Maintain clear and direct communication with workers performing hot work, ensuring they are aware of fire safety protocols.
- Documentation: Keep accurate logs of fire watch activities, incidents, and any fire hazards identified during the shift.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire safety standards, as well as company policies.
- Equipment Inspection: Regularly inspect firefighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers, to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Worksite Cleanup: Assist in cleaning and clearing areas of fire hazards after hot work has been completed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience as a Fire Watch or in fire prevention is preferred, but not required.
- Familiarity with fire safety procedures and equipment (training will be provided).
- Ability to remain focused and attentive for extended periods.
- Basic knowledge of sawmill operations and hot work processes is an asset.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including standing for long periods and working in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
Certifications (preferred but not required):
- Fire Watch certification
- First Aid and CPR certification
- OSHA safety training
Working Conditions:
- Work in an industrial environment, with exposure to dust, noise, and machinery.
- Shift work may be required, including nights and weekends.
- Protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats will be required.
