Job Overview:
The Speech-Language Pathology Specialist is responsible for delivering comprehensive clinical services in speech and language pathology. This includes conducting patient assessments, interpreting evaluation outcomes, and implementing interventions for a diverse range of diagnoses across pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
The specialist will effectively evaluate and treat impairments in language, speech, and swallowing that may arise from neurological conditions, developmental challenges, or anatomical changes due to trauma or surgical procedures. Collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals is essential, as well as providing clinical direction to non-licensed staff.
The Therapist will also administer contrast media under the supervision of the attending radiologist during videofluoroscopy to observe and gather data on swallowing functions.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum Education:
A minimum of 50 hours of continuing education in specialty areas is required. To maintain licensure, SLPs must complete at least one continuing education course annually in their specialty. - Minimum Experience:
Five years of active clinical experience as a licensed SLP is required. Proficiency in 2-3 of the following areas is essential: Bedside Swallow Evaluation, Videofluoroscopy, Blue Dye Swallow Evaluation. Strong customer service skills are mandatory. - Minimum License:
Current California licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist is required. BLS certification is necessary. Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC) through ASHA is required, along with any specific procedure certifications.
In exceptional circumstances, a grace period of no more than one month will be allowed for ASHA Certification of Clinical Competency renewals. Additionally, annual stroke education of 2 hours is required for those working in specific areas.
