Data Assimilation/Machine Learning Research Assistant

Colorado State University is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals to fill two internship positions in data assimilation and machine learning. The successful candidates will be part of a joint effort between the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to increase expertise in these critical areas.
The internship positions involve both theoretical and practical training elements, with a focus on developing skills in data assimilation and machine learning methods. The interns will be based in NOAA's Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) in Boulder, Colorado, and will report to CIRA's Data Assimilation team lead in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The core training period will last for three months, during which the interns will learn how to use several models and cutting-edge data assimilation techniques used operationally at NOAA, as well as machine learning methods that can support these DA techniques. The interns will then apply their knowledge to a relevant applied topic assigned to them by NOAA/GSL technical project advisors.
The positions require a NOAA Common Access Card (CAC) ID badge for computer access and therefore are open only to citizens of the United States and lawful permanent residents in possession of a physical USCIS "Green Card." The positions also require regular access to a Federal facility in Boulder, CO, and thus will require the ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Tier 1 federal background check for building access.
The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field, and experience with Fortran 90. Knowledge of machine learning methods, numerical analysis methods, numerical modeling, and experience with command line interfaces, high-end computing, and scientific programming languages like Python are also highly desirable.
The selected candidates will be required to actively participate in theoretical data assimilation lectures, machine learning training, and complete assigned reading and/or coding tasks intended to further their knowledge on data assimilation and machine learning. They will also work on a data assimilation research project applicable to NOAA operational systems, interact with NOAA GSL personnel to optimize the value of the research, support technical presentations of related work, and conduct research on relevant science and technology.
The positions are fully onsite at the DSRC and do not offer telework from off-site. The selected candidates will be required to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) federal background check and receive a NOAA Common Access Card (CAC) ID badge.
