Overview

Position Summary

This is a temporary role not exceeding 13 months, with the potential for extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Please note that this appointment does not grant permanent status within the Federal service.

Salary Range

Compensation ranges from $61,023 (Step 01) to $79,331 (Step 10); typically, first-time hires to the Federal Government start at Step 01.

Key Responsibilities

As an Ecological Research Scientist at the Western Ecological Research Center, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Gathering fundamental data through field studies and making observations where biological conditions are easily identifiable.
  • Supporting senior biologists in conducting research and drafting sections of reports on biological science studies.
  • Preparing samples and conducting data analysis in a laboratory setting, as well as drafting assigned sections of reports.
  • Engaging in minor aspects of planning, organizing, and executing biological research projects.
  • Contributing to publications for professional journals and preparing periodic written and oral presentations.
  • Operating government-owned or leased vehicles as an incidental driver.

Physical Requirements

Fieldwork necessitates physical exertion, including traversing wet, uneven, or rocky terrain, bending, crouching, and similar activities. Laboratory tasks require moderate physical capability and dexterity to handle samples and operate equipment.

Work Environment

Work is conducted in an office, laboratory, and field settings. The office is well-lit, heated, and ventilated, while outdoor work may expose you to temperature and weather extremes. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of specialized protective equipment. It is expected that all tasks are performed safely and orderly to ensure the safety of oneself and colleagues.

Key Requirements:

  • Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • The selected candidate may be subject to a one-year trial period.
  • A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is mandatory.

Special Requirements

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

A. A degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related fields relevant to the position.
OR
B. A combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in the aforementioned fields, totaling 4 years.

In addition to the basic education requirement, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

1 year of graduate-level education in biology or a related field that provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

OR Superior Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study.

OR one year of relevant professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service.

OR a combination of graduate-level education and professional experience.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, candidates must possess or be listed on a federal permit for threatened and endangered species issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for giant gartersnakes.

All qualification and eligibility requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

  • Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations.
