Andover, Massachusetts, United States Walmart Advanced Systems and Robotics Full time
Position Overview

At Walmart Advanced Systems & Robotics, we are at the forefront of revolutionizing retail experiences through cutting-edge technology. Our team is responsible for the innovative Alphabot system, which is transforming the landscape of shopping in America. We specialize in automated solutions for order pickup and delivery, leveraging robotics and advanced software to optimize operations and enhance customer satisfaction. Our mission is to harness technology to create impactful solutions that serve millions of customers every day.

We are currently looking for a Senior Optimization Research Scientist to spearhead the research and development of advanced routing and path planning algorithms tailored for our multi-robot grocery fulfillment operations.

In this prominent role, you will be responsible for leading the generation of concepts, conducting feasibility studies, demonstrating proof-of-concept initiatives, and validating new methodologies through simulations and laboratory tests. Your algorithms will be crucial in enabling our fleet of autonomous mobile robots to navigate efficiently in three-dimensional spaces, resolving conflicts and ensuring resilience against disturbances while adhering to strict real-time performance standards.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, advocating for algorithm performance in the design of next-generation systems. Additionally, you will oversee research initiatives, contribute to patenting and publishing innovative concepts, and engage with the academic research community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop formulations for multi-agent routing algorithms, articulating mathematical statements regarding feasibility, reachability, and optimality.
  • Advance algorithms towards practical deployment, considering system requirements, computational constraints, and operational limits.
  • Ensure scalability of algorithms to accommodate thousands of retail locations, each equipped with numerous autonomous mobile robots.
  • Validate the efficacy of your algorithms through comprehensive simulation studies.
  • Create detailed design documentation, mathematical formulations, simulation outputs, and architectural descriptions of algorithms. Note that translating algorithms into production code is not within the scope of this role.
  • Recruit and manage a team of scientists, establishing their objectives and integrating their contributions into a cohesive path planning and control framework.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Over 10 years of post-PhD experience in relevant research, with a focus on multi-agent routing, path planning, model predictive control, resource allocation, task scheduling, or decision systems.
  • Expertise in numerical optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency in high-level programming languages and their optimization libraries, such as Python, MATLAB, Julia, etc.
  • Capability to develop simulations for algorithm prototyping.
Preferred Experience:
  • Background in warehouse robotics or fulfillment operations.
  • Knowledge of queueing theory, combinatorial optimization, and resource allocation.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices, including unit testing and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CICD).
  • Experience in cloud-native environments (Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.).
Benefits:
  • Comprehensive health, vision, and insurance plans with options for dependent coverage.
  • Unlimited paid time off for salaried employees, encompassing vacation, holidays, and personal days.
  • Competitive 401(k) matching program, stock purchase plans, and equity opportunities.
  • Up to 12 weeks of fully paid maternity/paternity leave.
  • Exclusive Walmart discounts for in-store and online purchases.
  • Complimentary daily lunches, beverages, and snacks.
