Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily Cleaning: Perform regular cleaning tasks in public spaces and back-of-house areas, including offices, auditoriums, cafes, staff break rooms, and restrooms.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Operate and maintain cleaning equipment, such as floor buffers and carpet cleaning machines, to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Custodial Storage and Carts: Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including cleaning and maintaining your cleaning cart and ensuring a continuous inventory of approved cleaning supplies.
  • Communication: Alert your supervisor and colleagues of any changes to the posted work schedule and assist in producing the monthly custodial work schedule by submitting requests for days off at least two weeks in advance.
  • Recycling and Trash: Sort and transport items for recycling to the designated area and remove trash from the building to the designated pick-up area.
  • Reporting: Inform your supervisor of any condition problems with the interior environment or any part of the facility requiring maintenance and report pests found to the IPM technician.
  • Training: Attend safety and defensive driving training as required and follow safety and security procedures, including the use and disposal of cleaning supplies and chemicals.
  • Other Tasks: Work with your supervisor, colleagues, and contractors to perform non-routine cleaning jobs, such as interior window washing and floor waxing, and make local deliveries and pick-ups as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education: 10th grade education and one or more years of experience performing custodial duties as part of a team.
  • Experience: One or more years of experience performing custodial duties in a museum or similar environment.
  • Skills: Basic knowledge of computer use, including the ability to use email; valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license (or the ability to obtain one) and an acceptable driving record.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to clean all types of interior building finishes and spaces.
  • Ability to operate maintenance equipment, such as floor buffers and carpet cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with guests and co-workers and work independently and with others.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written schedules and instructions.
  • Ability to work in environments containing dust, pollen, and mold.
  • Ability to work an assigned schedule totaling 40 hours per week, including weekends, evenings, early mornings, holidays, and special events.
