New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) is dedicated to providing civil legal assistance to low-income residents in New Mexico, fostering family and economic stability. Our mission is to help clients secure essential resources such as food, shelter, and safety while honoring their unique cultural identities.
The Native American Program (NAP) at NMLA offers complimentary legal services to eligible low-income Native Americans residing in or near the 19 Pueblos and the Mescalero Apache tribe. Our focus includes not only cases that enhance family and economic stability but also those related to tribal and Indian law, estate planning for tribal property, and addressing issues of racial discrimination.
This role is primarily based in New Mexico, with occasional travel required throughout the state.
Key Responsibilities
The Litigation Managing Attorney will work closely with the NAP Director and will be responsible for:
- Providing mentorship and supervision to NAP Staff Attorneys, Paralegals, and volunteers, including regular one-on-one case reviews.
- Managing a caseload for low-income clients that aligns with NAP's legal priorities.
- Overseeing the intake process, preparing cases for acceptance, and delegating cases to NAP Staff Attorneys.
- Evaluating NAP's legal work to ensure adherence to NMLA and NAP standards.
- Reviewing all casework conducted by NAP.
- Approving litigation cases in accordance with NAP's strategic priorities.
- Organizing and facilitating monthly training sessions for NAP staff.
- Ensuring compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) requirements and professional conduct standards.
- Acting as the primary liaison for Pueblo courts, managing court appointments and admissions.
- Assessing the needs of NAP applicants to develop strategies with potential systemic impacts.
- Performing additional managerial or administrative tasks as directed by the NAP Director.
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of tribal law and federal/state Indian law relevant to NAP's work.
- Experience in low-income tribal communities, particularly within Pueblo settings.
- Legal experience, including familiarity with tribal court procedures and issues affecting Native individuals.
- Must be licensed to practice law in New Mexico or eligible for licensure.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a diverse team, adapting communication styles as needed.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Prior management experience in a legal context is preferred.
- Willingness to travel across New Mexico as necessary.
- Proficiency in utilizing technology and remote communication tools for effective supervision and collaboration.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and foster collaborative relationships.
