SENIOR AERODYNAMICS ENGINEER (STARSHIP)

The Aerodynamics team for Starship plays a crucial role in forecasting the aerodynamic and thermal conditions that both the booster and the spacecraft encounter throughout their missions. Our engineers utilize advanced engineering models, simulations, and wind-tunnel experiments to deliver precise predictions prior to flight validation. Collaboration with the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) team is essential to ensure the safe landing and recovery of both stages of Starship after mission completion. Additionally, the team provides support to structural engineers during the design process. A comprehensive understanding of the flow fields experienced by our vehicles across various flight regimes, from subsonic to hypersonic, is expected, along with the ability to effectively utilize our predictive tools.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, mesh, execute, and analyze Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models
  • Evaluate post-flight data against pre-flight predictions
  • Collaborate with engineers to provide insights into their designs and clarify the physical phenomena involved
  • Write and maintain code and scripts in multiple programming languages, ensuring compatibility within an automated workflow

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field
  • 5+ years of experience in aerodynamic and aerothermal analysis

PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree or PhD in aerospace or mechanical engineering
  • Proficiency with Siemens STAR-CCM+ and experience in Java scripting for it
  • Familiarity with NASA solvers for entry vehicles, such as FUN3D, Loci/CHEM, DPLR
  • Hands-on experimental testing experience
  • Data processing and analysis skills in MATLAB or Python
  • Experience with Siemens NX
  • Knowledge of thermal protection systems
  • Strong foundation in external, compressible fluid dynamics

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work extended hours and/or weekends as necessary

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Salary range:
Aerodynamics Engineer/Senior: $125,000 - $175,000 per year

Your specific level and base salary will be determined on an individual basis and may vary based on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your overall rewards package at SpaceX. You may also qualify for long-term incentives, including company stock, stock options, or cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also included. You will accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually. Exempt employees receive 5 days of sick leave each year.
