The Surgical Tech First Assistant plays a crucial role in the operating room, providing essential support to the surgical team. Under the guidance and supervision of the surgeon, the Surgical Tech First Assistant adheres to hospital policies and regulations while delivering care to patients across all age groups, from infants to the elderly.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Certification as a Surgical Technologist is mandatory, along with successful completion of an accredited first assist program.
  • Educational Requirements: A High School Diploma or GED is required, meeting the qualifications and competencies outlined for Certified Surgical Technologists.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Preferred Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, including at least one (1) year in a First Assist capacity.

Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possesses a solid understanding of surgical anatomy, physiology, and relevant operative techniques.
  • Effectively applies principles of asepsis and infection control.
  • Identifies safety hazards and implements appropriate corrective measures.
  • Collaborates efficiently within the surgical team.
  • Understands regulations and policies pertinent to the role.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assists in patient positioning, preparation, and draping.
  • Facilitates hemostasis by managing blood vessels and other methods as directed by the surgeon.
  • Ensures accurate specimen preparation and maintains effective communication.
  • Handles tissues, sutures, and drains according to instructions.
  • Assists with the removal of sutures and staples as needed.
  • Supports the circulating nurse upon request.
  • Utilizes knowledge of surgical anatomy and physiology during procedures.
  • Performs additional duties under the supervision of the surgeon.

  • Weight Carried: Able to carry up to 50 lbs, frequently required 31-65% of the time.
