JOB TITLE: Pre-Operative Nursing Specialist
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Pre-Operative Nursing Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional nursing care to patients within an outpatient surgical environment. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of patient care in alignment with physician directives and organizational protocols. Additionally, the specialist will manage the inventory and billing of supplies utilized during procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Supervisor of Clinical Services
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Graduate from an accredited nursing program
- Valid Registered Nurse License
- Current certifications in BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Evaluates, formulates, and executes comprehensive nursing care plans for pre-operative patients
- Documents and communicates any symptoms, reactions, irregularities, and changes in patients' physical or mental states to the appropriate personnel
- Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician
- Provides care and facilitates the discharge process for pre-operative patients in accordance with facility policies
- Verifies the accuracy and completeness of pre-operative patient records
- Ensures that surgical consent forms are accurately completed, matching them with physician orders and the operating room schedule
- Confirms that all necessary pre-operative evaluations (lab tests, imaging, history and physical exams) are documented and alerts the anesthesiologist and/or surgeon of any abnormal results prior to surgery
- Communicates relevant pre-operative information to the operating room nursing staff
- Organizes and labels personal belongings for patients and assists them in preparing for surgery
- Completes registration forms and pre-operative checklists
- Administers pre-operative sedation as per physician orders
- Ensures that medication administration is preceded by appropriate orders
- Inquires about allergies before administering any medications
- Documents medication administration on the pre-operative worksheet, including dosage, timing, and method
- Demonstrates independent functioning in emergency situations
- Exhibits proficiency in nursing skills during emergencies
- Utilizes sound judgment to make quick and logical decisions
- Maintains patient and employee confidentiality while providing psychological support to patients and their families
- Builds and maintains professional relationships with physicians and medical departments involved in pre-operative evaluations
- Engages in continuous education to uphold professional competence
- Meets continuing education requirements for re-licensure
- Participates in all facility training sessions
- Assists in the orientation of new staff as needed
- Ensures cleanliness and organization within the work environment
- Reports any malfunctioning or damaged equipment
- Adheres to established safety protocols within the facility and department
- Performs additional duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Familiarity with healthcare products, inventory management, and supply chain processes
- Understanding of medical terminology relevant to healthcare products
- Knowledge of inventory control methods
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail and superior organizational skills
- Capable of handling a significant volume of detailed work with accuracy
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Demonstrates strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities
- Physically capable of bending, lifting, and managing supplies
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with colleagues, vendors, and management
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations
- Skilled in data entry and tracking of equipment and supplies
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: The role requires a combination of sitting and standing typical of a standard office environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: The position is situated in a busy office environment with significant telephone communication. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.
