Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs routine laboratory analyses and quality control, recording results and maintaining laboratory equipment. Essential duties include:

  • Conducting routine analyses and quality control as required.
  • Maintaining detailed records of work performed and results obtained.
  • Cleaning and storing laboratory equipment per analytical requirements.
  • Recording equipment temperatures and performing bacteriological analysis on weekends and holidays.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with sample collection.
  • Performing additional duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of basic chemical, biological, and analytical concepts used to analyze water, waste water and environmental samples.
  • Knowledge of computer basics.
  • Knowledge of math, including decimals and use of equations.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, calibration and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of quality control principles and application.
  • Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations regarding water quality and water treatment processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other city employees and the public.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and organize workload effectively.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to seeing, sorting, holding, carrying, squatting, and writing.
  • Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to operate, calibrate, and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment.
Qualifying Education and Experience

High school diploma plus six hours of college level Chemistry and/or Geology and three hours of computer basics. Or any equivalent combination of education and experience. TCEQ Class D Water License is required within first 6 months of employment. An Offer of Employment is conditional upon successful completion of the following: Criminal History Check, Physical, Drug and Alcohol Testing and Motor Vehicle Report.
