Nursing Assistant

The Nursing Assistant plays a vital role in providing exceptional patient care in a hospital setting. As a key member of the healthcare team, this individual is responsible for attending to the needs of patients, performing duties under the direct supervision of the unit charge person, and adhering to hospital policies and procedures.
This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and previous experience as a Nurse Assistant in a hospital setting is preferred. BLS certification is also required upon hire and within 30 days of hire.
The Nursing Assistant is trained in delivering age-appropriate care and is expected to prioritize orders in a timely and accurate manner. This individual must also be able to recognize priorities and deal with them appropriately.
Responsibilities include:
- Completing vital signs and reporting them to the nurse
- Answering telephone calls and routing messages to appropriate personnel
- Keeping patient records current
- Notifying the nurse of any significant changes in patient condition
- Requisitioning supplies and equipment
- Returning films by the end of the shift
- Transporting patients as indicated
- Obtaining x-rays and medical records as needed
- Assisting in the chemotherapy area as needed
- Ensuring charts are supplied with appropriate forms for documentation
- Relaying messages to the appropriate caregiver within 5-10 minutes of receiving the message
- Prioritizing orders in the order entry system in a timely and accurate manner
- Posting reports in a timely and accurate manner
- Scheduling patient appointments with the physician's office, other departments, and follow-up
- Using computer systems appropriately
- Assisting others as necessary and using time constructively
