This role is pivotal in evaluating and orchestrating both direct and indirect perioperative activities, which encompass surgical procedures, endoscopic interventions, and obstetric care, alongside comprehensive patient management.
The responsibilities include executing clerical and computer-related tasks linked to perioperative functions, as well as supporting fellow perioperative staff and surgeons during surgical operations and associated duties.
Key duties also involve preparing patients both psychologically and physically for surgical interventions, ensuring meticulous documentation that adheres to established guidelines, and providing assistance to anesthetists. Additionally, support in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) may be required, along with participation in on-call rotations.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrates composure and rationality in crisis or emergency situations.
- Effectively manages stress and exhibits teamwork capabilities.
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of AORN standards and Operating Room protocols.
- Familiarity with aseptic techniques and sterilization methods is essential.
- In-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, particularly in relation to surgical and anesthesia practices.
Licensure/Certification: Must hold a current Registered Nurse license from the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required upon hire through the American Heart Association, with Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification to be obtained within six months of employment. Additional certifications such as TNCC, PALS, NALS, or equivalents are preferred.
Education and Experience: Candidates must be graduates of an accredited School of Nursing. Experience in the Operating Room is necessary, while PACU experience is advantageous. Newly graduated RNs or those who have not worked in an acute care setting for the past 24 months must complete the Nurse Residency program provided by the institution.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance
Candidates must possess the physical capability to perform essential job functions, which includes prolonged standing and walking. Occasional patient lifting without assistance may be required. The ability to work under physical and mental stress for extended periods is necessary. Proficiency in understanding written and spoken English is essential. Candidates should demonstrate dexterity and mobility to operate equipment, retrieve supplies, and manage stretchers and tables. Occasional work in dimly lit environments may occur. Safe work practices with hazardous materials must be observed, and the ability to wear personal protective equipment, including surgical masks for extended durations, is required.
