Diagnostic Radiology Technologist

NYU Langone Health System is a leading medical center that offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Radiology Technologist to join our team.

Job Summary

We are looking for a talented Diagnostic Radiology Technologist to perform medically prescribed radiographic procedures. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining supplies and cleanliness of space, restocking supplies as needed, and notifying supervisor of any shortage of any supplies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform medically prescribed radiographic procedures
  • Maintain supplies and cleanliness of space, restock supplies as needed
  • Notify supervisor of any shortage of any supplies
  • Assist section in completion of special projects, reports, and activities
  • Maintain cooperative and professional relationships with patients, physicians, nurses, and office and clinical staff
  • Demonstrate skill in equipment set-up, utilization, and proper maintenance procedure
  • Perform visual and manual quality control checks of X-ray equipment, including monitors used for routine dictation/reading of clinical images
  • Use imaging and peripheral equipment in a safe and productive manner in accordance with prescribed hospital, departmental, and manufacturers' procedures
  • Recognize a medical emergency and notify nurse, PA, and/or MD immediately
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper radiation safety procedures and incorporate them into the performance of all radiographic procedures
  • Use gonadal shielding on all patients whenever possible, restrict beam to the smallest possible area, ensuring the least possible exposure to the patient without compromising quality
  • Eliminate the possibility of accidental exposures to X-ray by all persons
  • Maintain radiation detection badges and rings appropriately and return them as required
  • Understand the image processing software, perform segmentation and analysis of images to generate reports, and transmit the images to PACS and the electronic medical record
  • Generate high-quality hard copies of images when necessary
  • Use efficient methods and complete examinations assigned in a reasonable amount of time
  • Maintain cleanliness of radiographic area
  • Prepare equipment and supplies in advance for future exams
  • Make alterations in work schedule for STAT and emergency cases
  • Alter work patterns to satisfy the needs of the patient and medical staff
  • Follow special instructions indicated on radiographic requisition
  • Independently implement patient procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards
  • Explain the procedure and equipment to the patient clearly
  • Answer patient questions to ensure understanding and patient satisfaction
  • Provide for patient comfort before, during, and after procedure, and maintain an ongoing rapport with the patient throughout the procedure to ease any anxiety the patient may have
  • Provide for patient privacy at all times
  • Position patient and radiographic equipment appropriately to the body part(s) to be radiographed and adjust equipment settings accordingly to insure maximum information is obtained
  • Use lead markers appropriately
  • Follow accepted radiologic procedures
  • Ensure that all X-rays completed are of high quality
  • Use positioning and immobilizing devices to improve radiographic quality
  • Consider variety of protocols and rationale in determining radiographic positioning and technique
  • Use standard procedures to identify the correct patient using two identifiers (full name and birth date)
  • Check patient's wristband by name to ensure patient's ID matches examination requisition
  • Call patient by last name, asking patient to confirm their identity by stating their first name
  • Introduce self to the patient
  • Review patient's requisition and understand the type of exam required by each requisition and confer with medical staff regarding clarification when necessary
  • Seek information or ask for assistance from supervisor regarding difficult or questionable results
  • Follow accepted radiologic procedures and use medical information to determine type of protocol required for radiographic examination
  • Consult policy and procedure manuals and/or other reference materials as necessary to ensure actions conform to established protocols
  • Follow special instructions indicated on radiographic requisition
  • Recognize need for and follow isolation precautions
  • Effectively assess patient's information and status, and follow appropriate procedure(s) accordingly
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the HIS and access patient data for verification of orders
  • Competent in scheduling exams in RIS from the order entry queue and/or demonstrate ability to modify exams when necessary
  • Knowledgeable of the total cycle of RIS patient tracking
  • Follow departmental policy of documenting begin, complete, and departure times, when appropriate, in the RIS
  • Working knowledge of film library functions
  • Demonstrate ability to access patient information such as appointment times, type of exam, and patient reports
  • Maintain confidentiality on matters to which they are privileged
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the hospital and radiology information systems as they relate to radiology
  • Correctly choose appropriate patient information from HIS/RIS system in accordance with HIPAA regulations
Requirements
  • Certificate from accredited School of Radiologic Technology
  • New York State license or temporary permit to practice Diagnostic Radiology
  • Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • College graduate
