Job Summary:

As a Substitute Teacher with Albemarle County Public Schools, you will play a vital role in ensuring the continuity of education for our students. In the absence of the classroom teacher, you will be responsible for delivering lesson plans, meeting with students, and maintaining a conducive learning environment. Your ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students, communicate effectively with parents and staff, and adapt to new situations will be essential in this role.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver lesson plans created by the classroom teacher
  • Meet and instruct students in designated locations and times
  • Develop and maintain a physical environment conducive to effective learning
  • Prepare for classes assigned and demonstrate preparation upon request
  • Encourage students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities
  • Maintain and uphold school and county policies and procedures
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff
  • Provide information and seek clarity from school administration regarding questions related to students, instruction, and other concerns

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior teaching experience or eligibility for a Virginia Teaching License
  • Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students
  • Willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques
  • Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff

Working Conditions:

Duties performed typically in school settings, including classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, auditoriums, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips and movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be necessary. Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and medical professionals may be required.
