Job Summary

Rush University Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Pharmacy Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our pharmacy department, you will be responsible for providing clinical pharmacy services to patients, including order verification, discharge counseling, and education of healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities
  1. Evaluate and verify Epic physician's orders for therapeutic appropriateness, proper dosing, and optimal dosage form.
  2. Clarify physicians' orders when necessary through direct and timely contact with prescriber or designated practitioner.
  3. Provide patient-specific pharmacotherapy recommendations and drug information to medical and nursing staff.
  4. Participate in the pharmacy department's documentation of clinical interventions.
  5. Perform daily review of pharmacy reports, including pharmacokinetic monitoring and other drug or patient-specific reports.
  6. Conduct monthly nursing unit inspections of medication storage areas.
  7. Supervise pharmacy technician staff involved in medication preparation and delivery.
  8. Coordinate medication ordering, preparation, dispensing, and administration systems.
  9. Implement drug use policy and formulary decisions of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee.
  10. Participate in SE (ADR and medication error) reporting programs.
  11. Complete clinical and operational activities as designated by the departmental management team.
  12. Precept pharmacy students and residents in clinical and operational areas.
  13. Assess and evaluate medical and drug literature to compare and contrast therapeutic regimens.
  14. Implement medication safety initiatives as determined by current departmental needs.
  15. Develop operational and clinical projects as determined by current departmental needs.
  16. Serve as a liaison with other departments for collaborative research activity.
  17. Evaluate and monitor drug therapy relative to the total needs/problems of the ambulatory care patient.
  18. Actively participate in professional organizations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.
  • Illinois Pharmacist License.
  • Minimum of four years of Clinical Pharmacy experience or PGY 1 residency completed within the last seven years.
  • Knowledge in intravenous admixture services, intravenous drug therapy, and chemotherapy.
  • Ability to work effectively with others to provide safe and effective drug therapy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and quickly in responding to and resolving a wide range of problems.
