Annual Salary:
$141,610.00 - $181,350.30 (commensurate with experience and education)

Reporting Structure:

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is seeking a Principal Engineer to contribute to the BART Silicon Valley Phase II (BSVII) Team.

Our mission focuses on fostering collaboration and resource sharing with local transportation authorities to deliver transit services that prioritize safety, reliability, and sustainability.

As a skilled communicator, this individual will support the megaproject by building and maintaining productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate should exhibit proficiency in the following areas:

  • Providing interdisciplinary support to Project Managers throughout the project lifecycle, including planning, design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and maintenance.
  • Integrating considerations of maintainability, reliability, and operability across the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to enhance efficiency.
  • Exhibiting strong interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Understanding project management and construction management practices, including document control, project reporting, and risk management.
  • Being familiar with electrical, mechanical, train control, traction power, communication, and related support systems, while staying updated on emerging technologies and trends.
  • Applying knowledge of structural, civil, and track engineering design, construction, and maintenance to support informed design decisions.
  • Utilizing knowledge of transit system components and their impact on constructability and construction.

Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, budget, oversee, manage, and document capital projects from design through construction completion.
- Resolve design and construction discrepancies.

- Participate in policy and procedure development; monitor compliance with established standards and recommend improvements.

- Represent the organization with authority to enforce contract requirements; evaluate proposed contract changes and prepare independent engineering cost estimates.

- Manage design and construction management consultants on assigned projects; prepare and negotiate proposals.

- Participate in budget preparation and administration; monitor expenditures and track project schedules.
- Prepare analytical and statistical reports on project operations and activities.
- Review consultant deliverables and coordinate stakeholder reviews; serve as project liaison internally and externally.

- Coordinate with external agencies regarding work within their jurisdiction; manage documentation for construction contracts.

- Prepare or review various reports and correspondence related to construction projects.

- Supervise and review the work of staff engaged in professional engineering, design, or construction duties.

- Attend professional meetings to stay informed about new trends and innovations in engineering design and construction.

- Participate in resolving construction contract claims.

Educational Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Experience Requirements:
Minimum of five (5) years of verifiable experience in construction project management, engineering project management, or a related field.

Substitution Policy:
Additional relevant professional experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis; a college degree is preferred.
