Job Overview and Responsibilities

The full-time Registered Dietitian (Safety) will report to the Dietetics Assistant Director or their representative within the Nutrition Services at the Department of State Hospitals. The selected candidate will undertake various responsibilities, including but not limited to:


• Nutritional Evaluation and Monitoring


• Conduct comprehensive nutritional evaluations using the Nutrition Care Process for each assigned individual.

• Collaborate and consult with members of the treatment and interdisciplinary teams.

• Develop a more intensive Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) plan for patients identified as being at elevated nutritional risk.

• Assess and monitor the effectiveness of nutritional interventions and their outcomes.

• Maintain up-to-date patient profile information for all assigned individuals.

• Implementation of Nutrition Therapy Plans

• Execute the nutrition therapy plan in partnership with the treatment/interdisciplinary team.

• Communicate with Nutrition Services staff and oversee the personalized meal/nourishment plans for patients.

• Provide guidance to unit staff and patients regarding MNT as issues or inquiries arise.

• Engage in departmental meetings, professional practice groups, and hospital committees.


• Performance Improvement and Training Functions


• Organize and deliver Nutrition Group Education sessions.


• Safety, Security, Infection Control, and Emergency Preparedness


• Conduct oneself with professionalism while adhering to safety, security, infection control, emergency response protocols, and maintaining a non-hostile work environment.

Eligibility Criteria:
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service examination relevant to this classification, OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Currently employed with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable one (employees seeking consideration based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Previously held permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable one.

*Minimum qualifications will be verified before scheduling an interview. Candidates must provide proof of minimum qualifications with their application, which may include unofficial college transcripts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. (Applicants with proof of eligibility to apply for registration will be allowed to take the examination but must become registered to qualify for appointment.)

*If it is determined that an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, their name may be removed from the eligibility list.

Working Environment

This role requires working within a secured treatment area.

Additional Requirements

Candidates MUST provide proof of registration as a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
