Commercial Construction Estimator

The Commercial Construction Estimator will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates, bids, and budgets for new construction, renovations, and tenant improvements in the retail and grocery store sectors. This role requires a strong understanding of retail-specific construction requirements, including fast-track timelines, compliance with branding standards, and interior layout specifications.
Key Responsibilities- Preconstruction & Estimating:
- Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for retail and grocery store construction projects, including new builds, remodels, and tenant improvements.
- Analyze project plans, blueprints, specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope.
- Obtain and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes for all divisions, including site work, interior build-outs, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems.
- Conduct value engineering exercises to suggest cost-saving alternatives while maintaining design integrity.
- Bid Management:
- Develop and manage competitive bids, including material take-offs, labor costs, and equipment needs, ensuring compliance with client specifications and requirements.
- Prepare and submit bid proposals, budgets, and tender documents on time, following client or general contractor guidelines.
- Collaborate with internal teams and subcontractors to finalize pricing and ensure bid accuracy.
- Project Coordination:
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and post-bid negotiations as necessary.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, and subcontractors to clarify project requirements and resolve discrepancies.
- Assist in transitioning awarded projects to the construction team, ensuring a clear understanding of project cost, timelines, and scope.
- Budgeting & Cost Control:
- Develop preliminary budgets and provide ongoing cost monitoring and reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
- Track project costs and budgets in real-time, flagging any variances to ensure projects remain within financial targets.
- Work closely with project managers to adjust budgets and forecasts as required.
- Market Research & Analysis:
- Keep up-to-date on market trends, material costs, and labor rates, particularly for retail and grocery store construction projects.
- Analyze historical data and current trends to ensure competitive and accurate pricing.
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in construction estimating, with a focus on retail and grocery store projects.
- Proven track record of successfully estimating projects ranging from small tenant improvements to large-scale ground-up retail developments.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and market conditions, specifically for the retail sector.
- Proficiency with estimating software such as ProEst, Sage Estimating, or similar programs.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
