Position Summary

The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-centered nursing care and daily living support to assigned residents under the guidance of a charge nurse. The role requires knowledge of and the ability to provide age-appropriate care addressing both the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans. Responsibilities include assisting with essential health care needs, which may encompass bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and offering psycho-social support and personal care to residents. The MA may also assist residents with mobility, including transferring and repositioning, while utilizing appropriate techniques and equipment.

In addition, the MA administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse, adhering to state regulations and their defined scope of practice. Accurate documentation of resident care outcomes, medication administration, behavioral observations, activities, and dietary interactions is essential. The MA communicates any changes in residents' conditions, medication follow-ups, and care-related concerns to the charge nurse. Responsibilities also include collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens and vital signs, maintaining cleanliness in living areas, and assisting with wellness and recreational programs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Minimum age of 18 preferred. Previous clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care is advantageous.
  • Completion of yearly department-specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits is required, with a minimum of 12 hours annually based on state mandates. All required certifications must be maintained.
  • For all Good Samaritan Society Locations: Must possess the state-required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA), typically following the attainment of certified nursing assistant (CNA) certification.
